Some of you may already be aware of Nick Hogan, others probably not. Nick is/was a pub landlord from Bolton. When the 2007 smoking ban came into effect Nick arranged a mass smoke-in as protest. He got fined. More recently inspectors found people smoking in one of his pubs and gave Nick a £10,000 fine, despite him not being on the premises when it happened. Being ‘fair’ the authorities instructed him to pay £500 a month until the debt was cleared. I don’t know about you, but i couldn’t afford £500 a month; neither could Nick so he got slung in prison for 6 months. 6 months incarceration for standing up for our right to smoke. It seems Nick realised something the law doesn’t: pubs are private property, meaning what goes on inside is his decision when it involves a legal product. As he said himself, “it’s about freedom of choice”.
Not many people have the balls to say such a thing and stand up for a large minority, with Hamish Howitt being another notable exception. So to show our gratitude, we can write to him to show our support and for those of us in the position, we can send money to help clear the debt - it doesn’t have to be much, if 10,000 of those against the ban sent £1 he’d be out in no time. As it stands, over £3k has been cleared, so every little helps.Once the £10k is paid, he will be released from prison.
